Before you hit the road and take in the best of the United States, it is important to make sure that you have quality RV insurance and that you have performed a complete safety check on your RV.

You need to carry insurance on you RV just like you do with your regular vehicle. Make sure that the insurance you carry will cover any situation you may encounter during your travels. Here are a few types of RV insurance coverages you may need.

  • Total loss replacement will cover the cost of replacing your RV if it is totaled in an accident.
  • A personal effects replacement provision will cover the personal items you carry in your RV.
  • Vacation liability coverage will take care of any medical expenses acquired due to an RV accident, regardless of who is at fault.
  • Emergency expense coverage will ensure that you have money for both an alternative place to stay and alternative transportation if your RV experiences an event covered by your insurance.

In addition to making sure that you are fully covered by your insurance, it is important to perform a complete safety check before you use your RV. Just like with any other vehicle that has been sitting around without being used for a long time, it is important to make sure that everything is in working order before you set off far from home. Here are some essential RV safety checks:

Outside Your RV

  • Change your oil and oil filter.
  • Check your tire pressure.
  • Make sure all vehicle lights are working properly.
  • Test to make sure your windshield wipers are in proper working order.
  • Test all doors and movable parts.
  • Check for any damage the exterior might have sustained while not in use.

Inside Your RV

  • Clean the inside of your RV from top to bottom and air it out.
  • Check all drawers and cabinets for insects and potential water damage.
  • Make sure all the lights inside work and replace those that have burned out.
  • Check all the electrical outlets. Run the generator at home before using it on the road.
  • Just like inside your home, make sure that all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working.
  • Make sure your fire extinguisher still works.

Complete the above safety checks and have all the insurance coverage you need before you undertake your next adventure in your RV.
